Heeee Haaw!

Yes folks, I’m there. And “there” is not where I’d care to make my lair. Nah, it’s not that bad, really. I’m in the dead center of Atlanta, which so far has been pretty sweet. Only problem I have so far is the traffic. Everyone here seems to think themselves a Nascar driver. You constantly need to be checking to see if anyone needs your lane. I walk.

And yes! The boy is here. Though unfortunately I had to leave soon after he was born (grrr), so I’ve missed him for the last 3 weeks. We’re keeping an online picture diary for Tamlyn, which helps me pass the time. But Lee and Tam will be here soon (Sept. 9th!) and I’m having a difficult time thinking of anything else. Well, except for school.

My PhD program seems pretty rough so far. Of the two classes I’m taking this semester, I could teach one of them, but of the other I can hardly grasp a thing. But the weight is really in the research anyways. I’ve just found a project that I’m excited to work on. It concerns itself with the development of high energy structural materials using high strain rate data. Yeah…but we get to shoot a projectile at a sample at upwards of 1200mph! I’ll get you a picture once I get some data.

Well, that’s the short of it. I’m currently struggling with an assignment so that I can hand it in early before Lee gets here. I’d hate to have to work on it when they show up.

Driving Freedom

Today I went and got my driving permit! It opened up a whole new wolrd of driving freedom that I never thought possible!! I can drive anywhere anytime whenever i want!! But I have to go with my parents or someone else who has had their license for 5 years. *Sigh*

GREat GREasy GREmlins!

How about MLA? Are MLA formatted citations okay?? C’mon, I’d like my thesis to qualify for a MathcaddyÔø? endorsement.

Well, I’m looking forward to taking the GRE tomorrow (eager anticipation I promise), and have been reviewing for it using a supplemental CD I was mailed. I thought I was sitting pretty doing the practice math questions. For example: if a < 0 and b = a^2, is b an odd or even number? (This is mathcaddy, right? Where we talk and laugh about math?)

Then I tried the english section...

Ouch.

OUCH.

Wish I payed more attention in my Latin class.

“I am a fish.”

Heaven’s to Betsy No!!

In the words of the immortal David Letterman, “Oh, I sure hope so” [1]. In fact, I’ve been reviewing as much about southern culture as I can get my hands on (Gone with the Wind, Roots, Shaft). I had the delightful opportunity to visit Georgia Tech early this month, and the ill fortune to visit Georgia that same trip. It’s a strange place folks. I’m surprised you don’t need a passport to travel to the south. As I was driving around, I noticed a whole neighborhood posting the glorious confederate flag at their doorsteps. It took me a moment to realize that it was the state flag from ’56 to 2001. Guess old feelings die hard.

I’d love to come visit everyone back home – when would y’all be ’round? I’ll be spending most of the summer in Olympia, to allow Lee all possible comforts while we wait for her to give birth. Should be sometime around August 2nd. I’ll be leaving for a couple weeks to look for a house in Georgia, but otherwise I should be free to travel. I just sold my bike last night (sob sob) but I could take the rice rocket. So let me know when would be a good time. Shit, we’ll get drunk, go rope some cattle, then get drunk s’more. Yee Haw!!

Crazy Canucks

If anyone is interested, I have rented out the entire facility at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle this upcoming Friday the 18th for a curling party. I have invited the entire MBA program here at UW, as well as friends and whatnot. If anyone wants to come, then let me know. It will cost $20, since the place charges me per person that shows up. However, once you’re in, you can curl and drink beer ’til your heart’s content! I’ll have beer and soda pop available, as well as fresh jive dance tunes for those that aren’t in the curling mood. Here’s a picture from the last time I went curling. It’s actually a lot of fun!

Dan, you’re going to Georgia Tech??? Are you gonna come see us in Tri-Town sometime before you leave, or are we going to have to come to Pullman? But more importantly, are you going to become a real redneck? Yeehaw!
