American Media is Broken

Monday, October 18th, 2004

If “American Media is Broken” sounds like an extreme title, um, that’s because it is an extreme title. It is also an appropriate one.

The term “broken”, does not mean “never worked” of course, nor does it mean “irreparable”. From an optimistic sense, when something is broken we are provided the best opportunity to fix it, even to make it better. And every good AA chap worth his twelve steps knows that admitting you have a problem is the first step to overcoming it. Thus, I present the problem as I see it. I do not claim to be the first to point any of this out. My aim is to aggregate and parse the truth.

This nation was founded not upon impetuous talking points, but on informed contemplation and authentic debate. Here’s to the hope that is our future and not merely our past.

Mathcaddy Radio: Session 8

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

It has been so long since the last Mathcaddy Radio Session, I’m beginning to suspect that any of my previous “regular” listeners - except Tony Park - have all deleted me from their newsreaders, bookmarks, and wedding invitations. But who cares! I’m not in it because I think people will actually listen! Although I still haven’t really figured out why I’m in it…

Anyway, I’m very excited to be back in it. I have about four more sessions all lined up and put together. I can’t wait to share them with all of you! (All three of you.)

But I digress.

This session is a collection of songs from the 1970s (except one). I had never heard any of them until the past month (except one). I’m not very structured. Maybe you’ve guessed that.

Don’t let the Beach Boys songs discourage you. These are a couple of mind-blowing tracks and a sound that you most likely haven’t heard from them. Most people wouldn’t even guess these are the Beach Boys.

I have nothing else to say, so I guess you oughta go ahead and listen up!

Mathcaddy Radio: Session 8

  • 02: Beach Boys - “‘Til I Die”

  • 05: Rolling Stones - “Happy”
  • 06: Styx - “Come Sail Away”

    End of an Era

    Tuesday, October 12th, 2004

Today marks a transition in the course of mathcaddy.com.

Originally started as a way for me to connect with a few friends who were scattered around the country, it pretty much boiled down to nobody. There were a number of things I considered writing for the site, but felt that they might be too serious or too weird or something. I don’t know. For whatever reason, I found the “community” blog thing increasingly difficult, especially as there was, um, nobody else posting.

It’s not that I was expecting anyone else to post something… it’s just that I felt like I set the site up to be and do something that it wasn’t any longer.

Giving my quick-witted and maniacally creative cousin, Steve, his own hosting space and subdomain (steve.mathcaddy.com) took him off the roster of regular posters, which left me just feeling silly about calling it a community weblog.

Therefore, as of today, this site is no longer a community weblog. Eric, Steve, Dan, and everyone else who at one time contributed something, I thank you very much for sharing in this fun experiment.

    Now on to other things!
